Wyndham Golf Club will celebrate its 100th anniversary this weekend, with more than 210 past or present members set to acknowledge the impressive milestone.

The club will become just the second country club in Southland to celebrate 100 years of history - Riverton was the first - and organisers are looking forward to kick-starting the festivities tonight with the unveiling of a flag and plaque at the clubhouse.

The celebrations continue tomorrow with 18 holes of golf to be followed by a banquet, and will wind up on Sunday with a dedication service and barbecue.

■ One of the tightest challenges in recent Laing Shield defences took place on Saturday, with Mataura doing just enough to successfully defend the shield against Drummond. This report came in from the Mataura club:

Mataura successfully defended the Laing Shield on Saturday against a well-prepared Drummond team. In stunning weather, Drummond led in five of the six matches after nine holes - and converted three of them into wins, leaving Mataura the uphill task of winning the three remaining matches. It came down to the last match between the No 1 seeds on the 18th hole and the last putt of the day.

It was a fantastic day of golf, although very testing on the nerves of the many supporters from both clubs.

Results: P Roberts beat G Catto 1up, W Ross beat L Dudfield 3/2, J Keenan lost to G Horner 4/3, B McNoe lost to C Flynn 7/6, M Borthwick lost J Shaw 2/1, J Williams beat A Bennie 2up.

■ The Digga Gore Golf Classic will be played during the weekend of February 9 and 10 and organisers are urging golfers to sign up for what is always a great tournament.

The format is for teams of two (any combination) who play a four-ball better-ball on the Saturday and an individual net on the Sunday.

Entries can be made to the tournament secretary at Gore Golf Club, PO Box 5, Gore.
