Costumed revellers are hitting the streets ahead of the Hertz Wellington Sevens rugby tournament, which begins at Westpac Stadium this afternoon.

The first game didn't but costumed fans were already pre-loading at Wellington's waterfront bars this morning.

am Phillips and four friends, three of whom came from Christchurch and two from Sydney, were dressed as four Tui beer cans and a breathalyser.

Mr Phillips said the group had been coming to the capital for the Sevens for the past "four or five years".

"We enjoy the weekend, obviously all the girls, and when the Kiwis bring it home," he said.

"But pretty much it's just the drinking."

Despite being dressed as cans of alcohol, the group said they would be "drinking responsibly".

A few of the costumed revellers taking to the streets were strictly there for the party.

Regan Wright said his group, who had dressed as dominatrix police officers, had missed out on tickets but came down from Auckland regardless.

"We've come down, it's Wellington, it's New Zealand's biggest party," Mr Wright said.

It was the group's sixth time coming down to Wellington for the Sevens, but the first time the group hadn't got tickets.

"We're all married with children, so it's our one time to get out and dress as females."
