Nine-a-side tournament to help pay for goalposts

The Winton Warlords Rugby League Club will host a nine-a-side rugby league tournament today in the hope it will raise some money for the club.

Winton Warlords official Andrew Osborn said the club hoped to get its own field at Moores Estate in Winton but it would need to buy some goalposts.

He said he hoped the nine-a-side tournament would help cover some of the costs.

The six teams that will take part in the tournament today are Cooks, Bluff, Winton, Gore, Cowboys, and a team called Team Tom Norman made up of a bunch of mates.

Each team will play each other once, with the top two teams playing off in a final.

Osborn said he was grateful to the Midlands Rugby Club for again providing its grounds for the day.

The first game will kick off at 10.30am and the tournament is expected to run until about 5pm.

The nine-a-side rugby league concept has gained prominence recently with news that Auckland-based events company Duco Events are in talks about putting on a nine-a-side tournament next year featuring all the NRL clubs.

The shortened tournament would be a $2.2 million venture and would involve the NRL's top players converging on Auckland's Eden Park.
