Southland golfer Vaughan McCall is the best of the Kiwis as the New Zealand team made a slow start to the South African Stroke Play Championship in George.

McCall, who mixed five bogeys with four birdies for a one over par 73, is in a share of 33rd place after round one at the Ernie Els designed Oubaai Golf Resort and Spa.

The 21-year-old from the Gore Golf Club is seven shots back from the trio of leaders:  South Africa's Louis Taylor and Werner Ferreira and Australian Ryan Ruffels who opened with rounds of six-under-par 66.

They are two strokes clear of South Africa's Damian Naicker and Joris Etlin of France in a championship that has drawn a strong international contingent on the back of last week's Ten Nations Cup tournament.

Manawatu amateur Joshua Munn (74) is one shot further back in a share of 45th, Levin golfer Tyler Hodge (75) is tied 54th and Takaka No.1 Blair Riordan is tied 87th after signing for a six-over-par 78.

It is a disappointing start for the Kiwis who performed so well to finish runner-up at the inaugural Ten Nations Cup by one shot to Australia last weekend.
