Manawatu amateur Josh Munn has fired a seven under par 65 at the Oubaai Golf Resort and Spa in George to jump into contention at the South African Stroke Play Championship.

The 21-year-old from the Manawatu Golf Club, who opened with a two over par 74 in the windy conditions of round one, climbed from tied 45th into a share of ninth place.

Munn, who recently became only the third New Zealander to win the Lake Macquarie Cup, will begin round three on a five under par total only four shots back from South African Werner Ferreira (66, 69).

The New Zealand rep got off to a slow start in round two with a bogey on the first hole but he soon made up for that with a run that included four birdies and an eagle to make the turn in five under par.

He added further birdies on 12 and 14 and then made four pars coming home to sign for a 65 and the low round of the day by two shots.

Southland No.1 Vaughan McCall also made the most of the benign morning conditions on day two.

The 21-year-old from the Gore Golf Club, who opened with a round of one over par 73 to be tied 33rd, carded a four under par 68 in round two to jump 20 places into a share of 13th.

McCall, who in the next few months will look to defend both his New Zealand Stroke Play and New Zealand Amateur titles, is on a three under par total six shots back from Ferreira.

The two-round cut fell on five over par and the two other Kiwis in the field Tyler Hodge (75, 76) and Blair Riordan (78, 74) both missed the mark.

Hodge finished on seven over par to miss by two shots. His round included three birdies, three bogeys and a triple bogey eight. Riordan was a further shot back on an eight over par total.

The Kiwis are in South Africa playing this SA Stroke Play Championship after they competed in the inaugural Ten Nations Cup where they finished runner-up by one shot to Australia.
