Southland's young tennis players produced an outstanding result during the weekend when they took out the overall prize in the Southern Districts' teams tournament played in Southland.

The tournament attracted five teams - South Canterbury, North Otago, Otago, Southern Lakes and Southland - and all up, 160 players took to courts around Southland for the three-day tournament.

The tournament was broken down into 10-year, 12-year, 14-year and 16-year age groups with matches played at courts in Gore, Winton and Invercargill.

Southland for just the third time in 26 years took out the honour for best overall performance at the tournament, the last time Southland laid claim to that was in the 2005-06 season.

It was the girls' 10s team that led the way for Southland because it was unbeaten during the entire tournament.
