Some interesting matches have produced some new semifinalists in the 2013 New Zealand Golf Women's Match Play Championships at Wellington's Otaki Golf Course.
There were no surprises, however, in the win yesterday by Robyn Boniface (Queens Park) over Trish McBride (Ngahinepouri), 7/6.
Having dominated the tournament for the past three years, Boniface was one under the card when she turned 5-up and took only three more holes to secure the win. She is seeking her fourth senior championship.
It will take all of Coromandel player Julie Gee's skill to take on this experienced representative when she meets Boniface in the semifinal today, in the top division, competing for the Veterans Challenge Cup.
Having only turned 50 recently, this is Gee's first senior tournament.
She beat one of the local favourites, Kay Wall (Otaki), 2/1 in her quarterfinal yesterday.
Hawke's Bay representative Janie Field (Napier) who qualified in second position, needed an extra hole to beat Caroline Scott (Whanganui) to be the third semifinalist. Scott, who is a Whanganui/Manawatu representative, was three holes up early in the match until Field found her putting form and clawed her way back from 3-down with four to play. All square on the 18th, Field won the extra hole and will meet Robyn Pellow in her semifinal.
Pellow (Ngaruawahia) also dashed local hopes in beating Otaki club champion Fiona McBride 3/2. Pellow has been a regular Waikato representative and won the Veterans Challenge Cup in 2009, when the event was played at Martinborough.
However, an Otaki player is a strong possibility to make the final of the Waipukurau Jubilee Salver, with two members alive in division two.
Penny Bertelsen will play for home glory against Harriet Byelich (Taumarunui) in the first semifinal, while Gill McConway meets Carrol Fouhy (Ngaruawahia) in the other semifinal.
In division 3, playing for the Hawke's Bay Salver, Annette Nickalls (Te Marua) will play against Diane Jellyman (Lower Waitaki Golf Club) in the first semifinal.
In the second semifinal, Joanne Carson, another Te Marua member, will play Leslie Hatcher (Horsham Downs).
The Manawatu-Whanganui Salver, for division 4 qualifiers, has Jill Timmins (Boulcott Heritage) scheduled to play Robyna Aitken (Paraparaumu) in the first semifinal, while Liz Kettle (Boulcott Heritage) will take on Laurie Fogg (Lochiel) for the other final place.
All semifinals will be played this morning, starting at 8.30am on the Otaki course, with all finals to start at 12.30pm.
