Big interest in golf event
Chinese media giant Sina.com is covering the NZ PGA Championships, and while there is a healthy crowd at the event, Sina Sports dwarves that with a potential readership of a billion people.
Sina Golf Channel editor Li Xing Bin is tasked with shooting both still and video images for the media portal, and reckons Chinese golf readers, who log into Sina's dedicated golf channel at a rate of millions a day will fall in love with New Zealand through the amazing Arrrowtown scenery that serves as a backdrop to the tournament.
Li is covering the progress of four Chinese players, Ren Han, Wen-yi Huang, Zhang Xin Jun and promising 17-year-old Li Hao-tong.
While he is shooting solo for the first two days of play, Mr Xing Bin will be joined by more Chinese media colleagues on Saturday as play ramps to the tournament finale on Sunday.
Although unsure of the amount of potential readers the entire Chinese media contingent could eventually reach, Mr Xing Bin was assured it would number in the hundreds of millions.
"It'll be great coverage for New Zealand, and especially the Queenstown area - especially if the Chinese players do well."
