Southland needs to beat North Harbour 1 this morning to remain in contention at the New Zealand under-17 age group netball championships in Hastings.
The Southland team, coached by Rata Hopa, experienced the highs and lows of the sport yesterday by beating Rotorua 35-17 in the morning and losing to Hamilton City 34-30 in the afternoon.
Southland's Madeleine Hunt excelled in the final quarter shooting nine goals from as many attempts.
"Our defence was good but we didn't look after the ball on attack," Hopa said last night.
"It was a bit of a wake up call for the girls."
Goal shoot Bayley Smith missed the clash with Hamilton City after injuring a knee in the game against Rotorua.
Southland had too much firepower for Rotorua in the second half.
"In the third quarter we took off," Hopa said.
