This week marks the start of the third term of the schools' calendar and the midway point for the school year.
The winter sports season is well through and many of the winter codes will wrap up their seasons through August. In the next few weeks there will be several regional events.
On Saturday, Southland will host the annual Otago-Southland aerobics champs, an event that usually attracts good participation. Next week will be the Otago-Southland skiing and snowboarding championships at Cardrona Ski Field.
On week three of this term the Southland indoor bowls champs will take place on August 8. Both the Southland table tennis champs and the final of the Southland small target shooting champs will be on August 12.
Our College Games tournament will be on August 14 and a five-a-side social netball tournament on August 18.
National tournament week is the first week in September. This is when the New Zealand and Island tournaments will be held for winter codes such as basketball, netball, football, hockey, rugby, table tennis, ice hockey etc. Last year Southland schools sent more than 40 teams to events around New Zealand.
Invercargill will play host to the Trident Cup South Island boys football tournament which at this stage will include local teams from James Hargest College, Southland Boys' and Verdon College.
Our sports development programme this term will include the senior students leadership forum, as well as the Invest in Sport/Growing Coaches programme, which has 90 registered students. A highlight this term will be a South Island sports co-ordinators conference being hosted in Dunedin from September 15 to 17 for school co-ordinators and heads of sport.
