Gurney makes resort home
Adventure sport legend Steve Gurney confirmed one of the Wakatipu's worst-kept secrets this week announcing that he has moved to Queenstown from Christchurch.
He made the move after his Redcliffs home was red-stickered and red-zoned following the February 2011 quake.
Gurney is one of thousands of Christchurch people who were undergoing the stress of still not having their claims settled.
''It's totally out of our control,'' the seven-time Speight's Coast to Coast winner said.
''And one thing I've learned about stress, you have to separate what you can control from what you can't.''
Having been here a few months now and being a high profile participant in this year's Winter Festival birdman competition, he said he couldn't believe he did not move here years ago.
''I'm very happy living in an adventure playground where there's easy access to the mountains and wilderness.
''Most importantly, the people are awesomely friendly and I have heaps of friends here.''
The author and motivational speaker has retired from professional sport but still enters many events, and pulled a podium finish in a recent kayak race.
