McCall has mountain to climb
Southland's Vaughan McCall has a huge golfing mountain to climb tonight if he is going to make the matchplay stage of the US Amateur in Massachusetts.
In this morning's first of two strokeplay rounds, McCall, 22, shot a five-over 75 to be 10 shots off the pace and tentatively tied for 122nd.
At the time of writing, only 198 of the 312 players in the field were through nine holes and had registered scores on the leaderboard.
McCall is expected to drop further down the field as more scores come in.
He mixed his 13 pars with five bogeys on the Charles River Country Club.
The tournament's other course, The Country Club, is considered the much harder course and McCall plays that overnight tonight.
He'll have his work cut out for him to make the top-64, but he does have recent form of getting hot when needed.
To qualify for the US Amateur, McCall raced home with a five-under back nine to make one of just four qualifying spots out of a field of 300 in Texas.
