The Otago Volts' tentative steps towards the lucrative Champions League tournament in India begun in positive fashion yesterday.

The Volts are this week in Tauranga training and playing warmup games against a selection 11 as part of the run in to the Champions League twenty20 tournament next month.

The Volts blew off the cobwebs yesterday in their first warmup game and they did so in impressive fashion against a side that included current Black Caps Peter Fulton, Dean Brownlie, Trent Boult, BJ Watling and Roneel Hira.

Bowling first, the Volts restricted the Selection 11 to just 107 from their 20 overs with Neil Wagner the chief destroyer, taking five for 34 in his four overs.

All five of the other Volts bowlers used were also tight, including Southland's Jacob Duffy who shared the new ball with Wagner and leaked just 21 runs in his four overs.

In reply the Volts made light work of the run chase with only openers Neil Broom and Sam Wells spending time in the middle as they cruised past the required runs with just 10.4 overs gone. Wells smashed six fours and three sixes in an unbeaten 61, which come from just 31 balls.

Broom racked up five fours and a six in his 29-ball knock of 41.

The teams meet again today.
