Linwood Cup - football

James Hargest College and Southland Boys' High School will meet today in the playoff game for third at the Linwood Cup tournament being contested in Invercargill.

While both teams were disappointed to lose their semifinals yesterday - James Hargest College went down 4-0 to Upper Hutt and Southland Boys' High lost to Papanui - they still have Southland bragging rights to play for.

Their game follows the final between Papanui and Upper Hutt which starts at midday.

NZ rugby league tournament

Southland Boys' High School tasted victory on day four of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Rugby League tournament, beating Northcote College 22-20.


The lost their opening three games of the tournament but grabbed a much-deserved win yesterday. They finish the tournament with a game against Howick College today.

Much of the focus today will be on the final in which Auckland schools Mt Albert Grammar and Kelston Boys' High go head to head.

South Island girls' football tournament

Southland Girls' High School bowed out of the competition with a 4-0 win against Riccarton High School in Dunedin yesterday.

Girls' High finished fifth in the standings and coach Gordon Lamont said his team deserved yesterday's win. "We're pleased with fifth [place]."

South Island ice hockey

"We came to do the job and we did it."

So said coach Connor Harrison after his team, Wakatipu High School, thrashed King's High School 12-3 in the final in Dunedin yesterday.

Wakatipu's Max Macharg was the tournament's top goal-scorer with 21 goals and nine assists. He and team-mate Ben Harford played with distinction yesterday.

"We've got a lot of individual skill and some [five] play for national teams and gel pretty well with the young inexperienced guys," Harrison said.

Under-15 boys' rugby

Southland Boys' High School lost 29-15 to Shirley Boys' High School in yesterday's final in Oamaru.

Wing Darcy More and lock Logan Jones were Southland Boys' star players, manager Murray Wood said.

"They're a good bunch of boys and have played with a lot of ticker," he said.

Gore High School will today battle for seventh place at the Audrey Timlin Cup girls' hockey tournament in Christchurch.

In the playoffs for fifth to eighth places yesterday, Gore High lost 4-0 to Columba College of Dunedin.

Jenny McDonald Cup - hockey

Cromwell College will aim to secure fifth place today at the Jenny McDonald Cup girls' hockey tournament in Oamaru.

In another playoff for fifth place, Cromwell College beat Massey High School 1-0 yesterday.

In another playoff, Dunstan High School lost 2-1 to Waitaki Girls' High School.

Mixed South Island hockey

Gore's St Peter's College and Queenstown's Wakatipu High School of will today compete for seventh place at the mixed South Island hockey tournament in Ashburton.

St Peter's yesterday were beaten 1-0 by Mt Hutt College, while Wakatipu High School lost to Mt Aspiring 2-0.
