About 30 children braved chilly conditions yesterday to take part in the Backyard Rugby League Day, which is designed to give Southland youngsters a chance to learn about playing the game.

Southland District Rugby League development officer Eddie He Hei recently visited south Invercargill schools, where students were given a chance to play the non-contact "tag" version of rugby league.

The overriding message he got from the children was that they wanted to have a crack at tackle rugby league and the older children who turned up yesterday got a chance to do that.

GAME CHANCE: About 30 children braved chilly conditions yesterday to take part in the Backyard Rugby League Day.

Six Southland Rams players were on hand to help out and they will again be present when the SDRL continues the event during the next two Sundays.

The event runs from 11am to 1pm at the Elles Rd grounds and anyone interested just needs to turn up.

Meanwhile, the Rams had the bye in the South Island provincial competition at the weekend but opted to have a hitout against an invitational team and won comfortably.
