Raising funds for nationals
Southland Girls' High School will be the only Southland team at the national secondary schools netball tournament in Auckland next month.
By finishing fifth at last week's South Island secondary schools tournament in Christchurch, Girls' High were guaranteed a place at the nationals. The top-16 schools* - all determined at last week's tournaments throughout the country - compete at the nationals.
Girls' High coach Natalie Avellino was pleased with her team in tough pools in Christchurch, but now the focus is on more training and ways to raise funds for the trip to Auckland. Girls' High will be attending the nationals for the first time in 15 years.
"We'll apply for funding, send an email out to parents . . . a sponsor would be great," Avellino said yesterday. * The complete list of teams for the national secondary schools netball tournament is:
South Island qualifiers: Southland Girls', St Margaret's College (Christchurch), South Otago (Balclutha), Waimea College (Nelson), Christchurch Girls'.
Upper North qualifiers: Mount Albert Grammar School (Auckland, defending champions), Pukekohe, John Paul College (Rotorua), Baradene College (Auckland), Auckland Girls' Grammar, Westlake Girls' (Auckland).
Lower North qualifiers:
St Mary's College (Wellington), Tu Toa (Palmerston North), New Plymouth Girls', Wellington East Girls College, Palmerston North Girls'.
