Gore boxer benefits from tight call
Gore's Clayton Stewart grabbed a tight win at the Canterbury Boxing Championships in Christchurch at the weekend.
Stewart took on Wiremu Herbert of Arapawa in the open elite 64kg division and was awarded the win in a split decision by the judges.
He was one of two boxers under the Gore banner who competed, with Aaron Lay lining up in the open junior 63kg division.
He fought Jesaiah Perelini of the Smiling Tigers gym in Christchurch, Perelini taking a unanimous decision.
There were 23 bouts from the novice cadet 36kg division through to the open elite grades.
Jermaine Taumiti was awarded Mick Drury Memorial Belt for the most scientific boxer. Taumiti had two fights in the open junior 70kg division, beating Declan O'Neill of Ashburton and Cambell Marr of Temuka.
