Sprinter Stark adds rugby to sports CV
Blue Mountain College's Gavin Stark has been named in the New Zealand secondary schools rugby team to Australia, Fiji and Australia A in Sydney next month.
Stark's sporting abilities has previously centred on his athletic skills as a sprinter.
In April this year he won the senior boys' 100m title at the South Island secondary schools championships with a time of 11.45sec. He was also second in the 300m hurdles (42.48sec).
Not surprisingly it is on the wing where he has impressed on the rugby paddock on the way to his inclusion in the New Zealand secondary schools team.
While Stark attends Blue Mountain College, he played this season for South Otago High School in the Highlanders First XV competition.
He is aligned to the Otago Rugby Union, but represents Southland in athletics and has been in the Academy Southland sports programme under the guidance of Jason McKenzie.
Other Southland connections named in the New Zealand secondary schools team are halfback Harry Peeters and first five-eighth Damien McKenzie.
Both are from Gore, but now attend Christ College.
A second tier New Zealand Barbarians secondary schools team was also named and included Southland Boys' High School halfback Liam Howley.
The Barbarians team will play a Auckland schools selection team.
Rugby Southland academy manager Peter Skelt said Howley was a livewire halfback.
He worked hard and deserved his spot in the side.
