James Hargest's canoe polo hat-trick
James Hargest High School has won gold in the open grade for the third consecutive year at the South Island secondary schools canoe polo championships.
Southland had three teams competing - two from James Hargest and one from Southland Boys' High School - at the championships in Oamaru on August 24-25.
Members of the successful James Hargest team were Paul Richter, Justin MacGregor, Alec Adamson, Ella Hall and Katie Flett.
Boys' High finished fourth in the open grade.
James Hargest went close to winning the senior girls' section with a gritty second placing behind Christchurch's Middleton Grange School.
Five James Hargest canoeists were selected in the tournament team - Richter, Adamson, Hall, Katie Flett and Anna Flett.
Mike Clark and his wife Nichole coach the Southland secondary schools open and girls' teams, respectively, and hold training sessions at Splash Palace, Invercargill, on Sunday afternoons.
James Hargest's canoe polo manager, Sharon Rogers, said her teams gave 100 per cent commitment at the championships.
"They did us proud, they were wonderful ambassadors for the school and sport," she said.
