Basketball coaches James Paringatai and Logan Macic have confidence in their Southland boys' under-13 team in the countdown to the national championships in Dunedin next month.

"Having talent to work with helps," Macic said.

The 10-strong team is made up of students from several schools - Southland Boys' High School, Verdon College, James Hargest College and Lochiel. The students are Kupa Hawea-White, Richard Hancox, Nathan Walker, Matt Maginn, Tom Cowie (captain), Luka Williams, Mac Stodart, Jaxon Taylor, Harry Taylor and Aleiki Saili.

The team have won two competitions in the past two months. They won the regional championships in Gore on September 7 and 8. Teams from Oamaru south competed.

Last month, they dominated the Mass Participation tournament in Dunedin. They beat Otago in the final of both competitions and have notched four wins in total against them this year.
