Southland Girls' High School have added the secondary schools senior girls' basketball competition to their list of wins for the year.

They won the final against Central Southland College 54-47 in Invercargill on Friday night. It was the second consecutive year Girls' High senior A had won the final.

Georgia Yaxley (forward), Laura Overton (centre) and Kate Spiers (point guard) shone for Girls' High on Friday, coach Tania Culhane said.

"Georgia was defensively super-strong and Laura turned non possession into scoring moves."

The competition's Most Valued Player award went to Yaxley.

Girls' High senior A were unbeaten in an inter-school competition this year. They played teams from Otago Girls' High School, Queen's High School and Waitaki Girls' High School.

Spiers was selected for the Southland under-19 team, while other Southland Girls' High students Donna Bell, Meg Griffin and Charlotte Whitaker were chosen for the Southland under-17 team.

"They're a good bunch of girls. They train hard and put in great efforts [on the court]," Culhane said.
