A strong Southland men's masters team has been named to contest the Freyberg Masters national tournament in Christchurch.
Southland's masters golfers have been in good form of late, and will take confidence from some encouraging results when the national competition tees off at Coringa Golf Club on November 4.
The team features the familiar names of Karl Mariu, Blair Sinclair, Glen Sutherland, Gary Radka and captain Paul Adams.
Craig O'Rorke is the reserve and Bryan Dynes will manage the team.
Queens Park Golf Club's annual Golf in the Park tournament was a great success, with a full field of 224 players.
The Queens Park team of Russell Sinclair, Steve Phillips, Trevor Neilson and Joe Sanginiti won with a total of 240 stableford points. Runners-up on 238 were Queens Park club secretary Sharyn Ferguson,Queens Park club secretary), Hannah Arnold, Peter Waddel and Shane Howley.
Three other teams finished on 237, and a highlight on Saturday came from Mat Tautari, who shot 66.
Lumsden Golf Club's defence of the Rosebowl Gilmour will have to wait, after bad weather forced their challenge against Otautau to be postponed on Monday.
Most pairs had played between four to eight holes before lightning, thunder and heavy rain forced them off the fairways. The club is hoping to get the challenge played today.
Lumsden have a chance to bulk up their trophy cabinet this weekend, with the men challenging for the Laing Shield - the men's equivalent of the Gilmour Rosebowl. The Lumsden men head to Oreti Sands for a challenge on Saturday.
In other news from the club, Lumsden's youngest member, Jack Barrett, aged "about 11", had a very good round recently. Playing off a 22 handicap, he shot a 77, with those he played with saying he made it look easy. Jack also plays at Tapanui.
The Eagles Golfing Society of Southland's annual Halberg Trust tournament will be played at Queens Park Golf Club on Friday, November 1, with tee off times between 12.30pm and 1.15pm.
The popular tournament, which is open to men and women, features a number of team and individual competitions including an aggregate teams stableford for teams of four (men, women or mixed), the Bob Grierson Memorial Teams Trophy (best team stableford score nationwide), Eagles tankards for best senior and best junior men's individual stableford score, the Silver Tray for best individual ladies' stableford score and the KIA Motors Trophy for best overall stableford.
Funds raised go towards the Halberg Activity and Sport Fund in Southland.

The Waikaka Golf Club's annual tournament will be played on Sunday. While the tournament has traditionally been open only to men, this year women are welcome to play, with handicaps up to 40.4. Play starts at 12.45pm and entries can be made on the day (from 12.15pm) or by contacting the club before then.
Mossburn defeated Te Anau 4 1/2 to 1/2 in the latest George Rogers Challenge. Results were as follows: N Hamilton 3 and 2 over M Woods, W Davis 3 and 2 over D Mundie, D Thomas all square with L Bernstone, A Pardoe-Burnett 5 and 3 over E Clark, B Stevenson 4 and 3 over G Stewart.
The next challenge is against Dipton on November 30.
