In case you hadn't realised the 2013-2014 lawn bowls season is well under way with the "official" opening on October 13. Competitions already completed include the annual Bill Kane and Harvey Keown inter sub-centre events, and the first representative games of the season against Central Otago.
The first event on the calendar was the Kane Memorial where South Town scored a minor upset by defeating traditional rivals North Town by one point.
Eastern was a close third, followed by Central/Western.
In the equivalent Harvey Keown event for development players it was Central/Western who turned the tables and scored the narrowest of victories in an event that gives the selectors a great insight on what new talent is available for the season ahead.
Competition was intense in the representative games with Central Otago and showcased some early season form for many players.
Honours in the development teams' events were shared with Central Otago winning the ladies 6-2 and Southland the men's by the same margin. In both cases the winning teams scored maximum points in the afternoon session after the first rounds were tied.
In the open events Southland scored convincing victories, the ladies winning 17-7, despite Central Otago's valiant efforts to bounce back in the second session, and the men winning 18-6 with Central Otago singles player Pat Houlahan the only shining light for his team with two wins.
Next weekend, November 1-3, the very popular ILT Foundation-sponsored Invitation Charity Pairs will be contested at the Bluff and Kew greens on the Saturday with the finals to be played at Waihopai on the Sunday.
This year's star attraction will undoubtedly be the return of New Zealand's worldNo 1 ranked ladies bowler Jo Edwards.
Edwards, a past winner of this event, readily admits to making time in her busy schedule to play in this event as often as possible and will be joined on her trip south with New Zealand coach and husband Dave.
Edwards was recently awarded the New Zealand Player of the Year for the third successive year and has again achieved title successes in both the 2013 World Cup and prestigious Golden Nugget events this year.
