The Southland men's golf team got its national campaign off to a sound start yesterday, winning its first match 3-2 against Taranaki.
The team, which includes Vaughan McCall, Matt Tautari, Tyler McLean, Kyle Dobbie and Jeremy Hall, had the bye in round one, before playing Taranaki yesterday afternoon in blustery conditions at North Shore Golf Club.
McCall, McLean and Hall each won their games, playing at 1, 3 and 5 respectively. McCall won 4/3, McLean won 3/2 and Hall won 2up.
Southland team manager Karl Mariu said the course was in great condition, and the greens were holding nicely.
"It was a very good start to the week, and we are all pretty happy," he said.
"The guys' short game really helped them out against Taranaki, which was great,"
The national Toro Interprovincial started yesterday and runs through until Saturday.
In today's matches Southland will play Waikato and Hawke's Bay.
