Top young ice hockey prospect Rebecca Lilly has been included in a New Zealand under 18 team.

The Gore teenager will line up against an Australian team for a five-game series beginning in Dunedin tonight.

It's the first national team the Gore High School pupil has been selected in, although she travelled to the United States with a club team two years ago.

Lilly, 15, took part in a training camp in July. Her selection was announced after performances at the national women's championship in Queenstown earlier this year.

Lilly plays mixed ice hockey for the Gore Grizzlies and has also been named as the only girl in the New Zealand under 16 mixed team.

"She mostly plays with the boys, but the under 18s is a women's team," Rebecca's mother Caroline said.

"It's the first time they've done it that way because they usually go straight from under 16s to senior women, which is a huge jump."

Lilly first started on the ice eight years ago as a figure skater and started playing ice hockey four years ago.
