It says a lot about the recent success of the Southland Girls' High School rugby programme that coach Nathan Muir was a little disappointed with last weekend's fifth-place finish at the Condor sevens finals.

Girls' High have established themselves as a force nationally in both the 15-a-side and shortened versions of the game, including a fourth-place finish at the Condor finals last year.

With a flat performance in a quarterfinal against beaten finalists New Plymouth, Girls' High were knocked out of the running for the title, but they came back to beat Lincoln High School in the plate final.

The standard of competition at the two-day tournament hosted at Kelston Boys' High School in Auckland has risen dramatically from the previous year, Muir said.

Hamilton Girls', who are setting the pace with their rugby programme, won the girls' competition, with Kelson Boys' taking out the boys' section.

While no Southland players had been selected in the tournament team, Georgia Mason and Alena Saili, who is only 14, both turned in impressive performances.

Muir will lose five players from his first XV and two from his sevens team next year, but was able to blood several new players at this year's tournament.
