SUCCESSFUL: Emma Hopcroft (Southland Girls' High School) won gold on the first day of the New Zealand secondary schools athletics championships in Hamilton yesterday.

Southland Girls' High School athletes Emma Hopcroft and Hinewai Collins won titles at the New Zealand secondary schools athletics championships in Hamilton yesterday.

Hopcroft won the junior girls' long jump with a leap of 5.54m, while Collins took out the junior girls' hammer with a throw of 35.79m.

Athletics Southland coach Lance Smith said Hopcroft and Collins were in fine form.

''Emma did an impressive jump, she was never out of first place.''

Rebecca Peterson, of James Hargest College, finished second in the senior girls' triple jump with 11.32m - the best she has done this season.

Blue Mountain College's Yvonne van Baarle repeated her performance from last year by finishing second with a throw of 34.79m in the junior girls' javelin.

The championships continue today.
