Shaun Turner provided the individual highlight on Saturday in a rain-effected round of Southland's Combined Country competition.

The rain cut some games short on Saturday although, despite a stint off the field, at one stage the Metro Cubs and Wyndale were able to get through their game in Invercargill.

Batting first at Queens Park, Metro got through to an impressive 299 for six from their 40 overs, thanks mainly to the efforts of Turner opening the innings.

Turner batted through the entire 40 overs to finish 164 not out in a 142-ball stay and it beat his previous high score of 155. He shared in a good fourth-wicket partnership with Zak Kelly (61).

To the young Wyndale attack's credit, they did give it their all, but the wet conditions and small boundaries made it difficult when Turner and Kelly got into their groove.

Wyndale also showed plenty of spirit with the bat, led by Jeremy McLeod (48), but they were eventually bowled out for 158. Brayden Lindsay was the chief destroyer, taking four wickets, while Daniel Mills and Kelly picked up two each.

Waikoikoi also piled on the runs in their game against the Southland Boys' High School 2nd XI on Saturday. Opener Anthony Robertson continued his good form with a knock of 74 while Shaun Tauti racked up 76 as Waikoikoi posted 330 for nine from their 40 overs.

Despite the Waikoikoi batsmen dominating, Sam Nicholson still managed to pick up four wickets with the ball for the students.

Southland Boys' were always going to struggle to chase down the required 330 but the encouraging aspect was they didn't fall over with the bat.

Keiran O'Neill (29), Ben Fotheringham (27) and Nicholson (23) all made useful contributions as the home team got through to 189 for nine.
