Rackham set for mighty mile
National secondary schools 1500m champion Jordan Rackham has accepted an invitation to run in the John Walker Mile at Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland, on Saturday.
Athletics Auckland asked track officials throughout the country to nominated runners for the Mile.
Rackham is Southland's lone entry.
The 17-year-old Southland Boys' High School student faces a difficult test in the Mile's under-20 division.
However, he is in form after winning the senior boys' 1500m at the New Zealand secondary schools' athletics championships in Hamilton on Sunday.
Athletics Southland coach Lance Smith said Rackham used ''brilliant'' tactics by waiting to the final 300m before challenging.
It was Rackham's first gold medal in athletics.
He is making plans to defend the title next year, as well as competing in a steeplechase.
He finished third in the open steeplechase at last year's secondary schools' championships.
Some Southland athletes will compete at the Lovelock Classic in Timaru on January 4.
As part of that meeting, Athletics New Zealand is holding a steeplechase workshop, at which six Southland athletes will attend.
