Southland found the going tough against home team Canterbury in the Jefferies Cup Tournament at the weekend.

Despite making a good start, two crucial errors at the top of the fourth saw Canterbury take a 5-0 lead, and eventually win 7-0.
Pam Craig's young Southland women's team, of which half the team are still under 17, beat Canterbury under-19 9-8 after two tiebreaker innings and then edged Nelson 7-6 in another cliffhanger. Tia Tuhakaraina had two hits in each game.

The Southland under-17 boys team, playing in a South Island tournament at the same time, lost 7-0 to eventual tournament winners Nelson, but beat Mid-Canterbury 14-4 and Canterbury 5-3.
