Murihiku competitors in medals
Murihiku Swimming Club swimmers Daniel Strang and Jack Corkery returned from the Otago 12-and-under championships with plenty of medals.
The 12-year-olds were two of the many Southland standouts at the Otago championships. Strang claimed two golds, a silver and a bronze medal at the championship, and Corkery returned with the same haul.
Southland coach Jeremy Duncan was pleased with what the 28 Southland swimmers produced in what was their last meet for 2013. "We . . . swam well at the Southland champs but we wanted them to go faster at Otago by putting their races together well and they did that," Duncan said.
"I think as a team our [personal best] percentage was up over 50 per cent, which was good."
The Southland swimmers will now get a break before returning to training in the new year with their sights very much on the South Island Town and Country Championships.
The event will be held at Splash Palace in Invercargill, with 65 Southland swimmers making the grade to compete at the meet.
