Southland rider Hayden Sims has finished third at the New Zealand under-21 solo speedway championships at Moore Park Christchurch.
Sims was the youngest rider at the championship and was second in each of his three heat races, which meant he progressed directly to the semifinals.
The 17-year-old had to place first or second in the semifinals to make it through to the final.
He was leading his semi, but Sean Mason was able to get past him going into the last lap, so the Southlander ended up second and booked a place in the final.
In the final he was coming second to Bradley Wilson-Dean but he went ever slightly too wide coming out of corner four before the last lap and Mason did the same as in the semi and snuck past him.
Sims ended up finishing third, which is an encouraging effort given he still has another four years to aim to be the New Zealand under-21 champion.
