Local three-quarter midgetcar drivers had their final hitout at Ruapuna Speedway on Saturday in a best pair racing format, before the New Zealand titles will be contested at the same venue in two weeks' time.

The best pairs title was taken out by former New Zealand No 1 Glen Durie (57) and promising rookie Liam McCoubrey (54). McCoubrey won the opening heat to finish on 111 points, 12 clear of Sam Neil and Glen Milroy with a close battle separating the next four pairs with Daniel McKinlay and Brian Barclay taking third by just two points.

Gareth Bindon and Jeremy Webb each claimed a heat and Bindon was top scorer with 59 but suffered when his partner Australian, Mike Griffiths, failed to finish two of heats. McKinlay took out the 20-lap feature from Bindon and Brian Fridd.

A best pairs format was also used for the sidecar racing who have their national titles set down for Ruapuna in three weeks.

Close racing was also a feature with the consistent Mike Warwood/Laurie McMahon and Nelson's Adie Drake/Owen finishing on top with 23 points from Bevan Nuttridge/Blair Low and Paul Anderson/Nick Case on 21, with Lionel Green/Shane Breach and Clint Warwood and Natasha Cullen third overall.

Jared Taylor dominated the midgetcar racing with the visiting Auckland driver winning all three heats of the Barry Butterworth series and then back up to win the feature from Nick Donaldson and Tom Lumsden.

Kris Jemmett and Kirk Hawkins were the pick of the drivers in the six shooter class each winning a series of 4x4 races with Hawkins winning the feature from Jayden Fitzgibbon and Jemmett. Montana Jamieson continued her dominance in the quarter midget class with two wins.
