Shearing Sports New Zealand's top-ranked woolhandlers and shearers converged on Balclutha at the weekend to contest the Otago Shearing titles.

Veteran woolhandler Keryn Herbert had collected a myriad of titles in the past 11 seasons but until Saturday, the New Zealand Woolhandler of the Year title had always remained elusive.

Herbert beat Golden Shears and World Champion Joel Henare to claim the title with 112.326 points compared with his 159.694 points.

New Zealand also won the head-to-head shearing test against Wales after gaining a considerable early lead.

Shearers Rowland Smith and Tony Coster won the second test taking New Zealand to 2-0 ahead of next weekend's third test at the Southern Shears in Gore.

It was a successful day for Smith, who also took out the Open Shearing Final title. Shearers will be back in action at the Gore Southern Shears next weekend.
