Wanaka-based Janina Kuzma has finished fifth in the final of the freeski halfpipe at the Winter Olympics.

The result follows Jossi Well's fourth-placed finish in the men's event at the Rosa Khutor extreme park earlier in the week.

Kuzma produced a strong run in the first of two outings in the final with a score of 77 to put herself into medal contention in fourth place.

FINAL-BOUND: Janina Kuzma awaits her score from the judges after one of her qualifying runs during the women's ski halfpipe event. Kuzma qualified eighth for the 12-woman final.

The judges didn't enjoy her second run as much, awarding the 28-year-old a 74.8, which saw her drop a place overall.

United States skier Maddie Bowman won the gold medal with a score of 89 in her final run, pushing top qualifier Marie Martinod into second place.

Earlier in the day, Kuzma comfortably qualified through to the final of the women's freeski halfpipe, with the event making its debut at the Winter Olympics. Kuzma produced an impressive first run to score 73.8 and place eighth after the first of two runs, with the top 12 advancing to the final.

She had already qualified before starting her second run, but still improved her score with a 75.2 to go through to the next phase in eighth place.
