Double whammy needed to oust mates

18:03, Mar 28 2014

Demons Blue have one heck of an assignment ahead of them if they wish to knock club mates Demons Red off the mantel as the Southland premier club softball team.

Demons Red have gone through the 2013/14 Southland club season and Southland/Otago intercity tournament without losing a game and today Demons Blue will have to beat them twice in a row to get their hands on the Calder-Mackay Shield.

With Demons Red finishing the season top-of-the-table they head into Saturday's two finals games needing to win just one.

Everything is stacked in favour of Demons Red, including the fact they have won the Calder-Mackay Shield for the past three years and have the province's premier pitcher, Daniel Perry, in their ranks.

They also have key batter Jonathan Campbell, who sits second behind Devon Robinson in the overall club batting averages.

For the Demons Blue team, key players will be the likes of Matt Telfer and Danny Shayler.

There will be three former Junior Blacksox in the Red team - Mathew Telfer (2005), Jonathan Campbell (2008), Timothy Campbell (2012).

Chris Telfer, from the Blue team, was in the Junior Blacksox in 2001.

Despite a broken finger Timothy Campbell will line up to help Demons Red to a win.

While there is bragging rights on offer between the two teams, the Demons club will continue to hold the tag of Southland's leading softball club no matter what happens in the final.

It will be the ninth year in the row the Demons club will etch their name on the Calder-Mackay Shield.

The first of the scheduled two finals will start at 2pm and if Demons Blue wins that the second will be played at 4pm.

Other finals at Surrey Park on Saturday include the Premier A final between Demons and Panthers Wildcats at 11.30am and the Premier B decider between Dodgers Mustangs and St Peters Blue will be played at 1.45pm on Diamond two.
