Southland will be well represented at the South Island Novice Boxing Tournament in Christchurch this weekend.

Southland publicity officer Tom O'Connor said all indications were positive for amateur boxing in Southland and the whole of the South Island given the interest in this weekend's event.

Organisers currently have 95thnominations and have confirmed 50 bouts for the tournament to be held on Saturday and Sunday.

Tui's Gym in Invercargill originally nominated 10 boxers but because of illness and non-matching the team for the novice event is down to six. All up, trainer Tui-Marie Sonter has 15 interested boxers at the moment.

Another Invercargill-based gym, BT Gym, will be represented by one male and five female boxers in Christchurch.

The Invercargill Gym, which has three boxers, will not be going to the event  while the Gore, Deano's and Elite Gyms will also not travel but have 12, four and six boxers respectively at the moment.

The numbers suggest boxing is strong in Southland and there will likely be a big local representation at the Southland Boxing Championships this year to be held in the Ascot Park Hotel on Sunday, July 20.
