The Invercargill Licensing Trust Southland Sports Awards will have internationally renowned rugby sevens coach Sir Gordon Tietjens as guest speaker on May 30.

Tietjens has won 11 World Series titles out of a possible 14, as well as four Commonwealth Games gold medals.

Sport Southland chief executive Brendon McDermott said Tietjens was an ideal fit to speak at the event.

"Coming from such a hugely successful sporting background I am sure Gordon will have some great stories to tell, as well as offering an insight into how he has achieved all that he has."

Interest in the Sevens was huge and with the Commonwealth Games approaching and Sevens being added to the Olympic Games schedule many people would be interested in hearing about Tietjen's experiences, McDermott said.

As well as Tietjens, the night will offer entertainment until the early hours of the morning at Ascot Park Hotel.

This event will mark the 60th anniversary of the first Southland sports award was given out.

"Every year the standards continue to impress. It has also been exciting to see so many high quality nominations from such a wide range of sports this year," McDermott said.

Finalists will be announced at a cocktail evening on May 8.

Awards evening tickets can be purchased from Sport Southland.
