Preparations for the Burt Munro Challenge are well under way with the marquee at Oreti Park rally site expected to be completely erected this afternoon.

An eight man strong team from Allied Workforce and Party Plus started work on the marquee on Friday and despite weather hindering efforts in past years everything had gone smoothly this time around.

Rally participants were yet to arrive, with numbers expected to explode by Thursday.

Organising Committee chairman Wayne Affleck said 1500 people were booked to stay at the campsite and many others had arranged their own accommodation in town.

The challenge kicks off on Wednesday night with the New Zealand Longtrack Championship and Grand Prix at Ascot Park Raceway where speedway world champions Barry Briggs and Ivan Mauger will both appear.
