Findlay wins medal haul
Wanaka's Jack Findlay was the region's only youngster to stand on the podium at the NZ Junior Nationals at Wellington on the weekend, collecting gold, silver and bronze medals.
Earning his gold in the boys' 10-and-under 50m backstroke, Jack was not sure what was happening, father Wayne said.
"He looked up and saw us jumping around and thought he'd won a medal. When he realised he was first he was rapt."
The win was a total surprise.
"He came out of the blocks and out-stretched them all."
The 10-year-old Mt Aspiring College student also collected a silver in the 50m butterfly and bronze in the 100m backstroke as well as two fourth places, a fifth, a sixth and a ninth.
Although he was small he had good training ethics, his father said.
The whole club was thrilled with their effort with each of the five members recording personal bests. Queenstown 12-year-old Mila Jojic, swimming for the Neptune Club, had the next best record with a fourth place in the 50m butterfly and a fifth in the 100m.
The five Queenstown Swimming Club members achieved 23 personal bests and five top-10 placings plus 16 top 20 placings.
