Hopes of a profitable season for Micktheshu were dashed yesterday when the galloper broke a leg in training at Ascot Park.
Micktheshu had to be put down. It was a blow to trainer Sean Bellew because Micktheshu had come up well in this preparation and was to resume racing at Ascot Park on Saturday week. He won twice in the North Island before Bellew secured him for southern racing.
His two wins in the south were in rating 70 events at Gore and Ascot Park.
King Prawn, who powered home to win a maiden event at Winton on November 20, is preparing for the Southland Racing Club's Christmas meeting at Ascot Park.
Winton trainer John Phillips gave King Prawn a week off after the win.
''He's quite a nice horse, possibly the nicest horse I've had for some time,'' Phillips said yesterday.
Phillips owns the King's Chapel gelding with Orepuki breeder Maurice Forde.
King Prawn could be considered for Guineas races in Otago and Southland early next year, if he continues to improve.
Burlington Bertie, who finished sixth in a maiden contest at Cromwell on Sunday, is the only other horse in training with Phillips.
A former member of the team, Thursday Dawn (one win), was retired after disappointing at Cromwell.
Prominent jockey Darryl Bradley will have X-rays taken of his injured right arm on Monday.
The Palmerston North rider broke the arm and dislocated an elbow when falling from Maximum Star in the Mudgway Stakes at Hastings in late August. He has undergone two operations.
If Bradley received a medical clearance on Monday, he could resume race riding within a fortnight.
