A racegoer will win two gold watches at Sunday's Gore Harness Racing Club meeting.
The watches form the prize in the club's Punt for Gold competition. Racegoers wanting to enter the competition have to select, in the correct order, the trifecta in race eight, the Van De Water Jewellers Pace. Entry forms are in the race book and must be placed in a container near the secretary's office.
A draw will be made if there is more than one correct entry.
Van De Water Jewellers, of Gore, began race sponsorship with the club at the corresponding meeting 15 years ago.
''They've been a loyal sponsor,'' club marketing officer Lindsay Beer said yesterday. A lolly scramble and free mini jeep rides are available for children on course. Kids Go Racing prize packs, which include a poster of driver Dexter Dunn, a stationery set, a book and a cap, is another promotion.
Meanwhile, seven Southland horses are making progress towards gaining starts at the Harness Jewels in Cambridge on June 5.
The Jewels is one of the major racedays in harness racing. It alternates between Ashburton and Cambridge annually and stake money on the day totals $1.5million.
Yesterday, rankings for the Jewels had seven Southland horses in contention: two-year-old filly Flashonbye (ranked 12th), two-year-old gelding Le Sol (third), two-year-old trotter Latheronwheel (fifth), three-year-old filly Ask McArdle (10th) and four-year-old mares Beaudiene Bad Babe (second), Trelise Jaccka (15th) and Kai Bree She (16th).
All races on Jewels day are over one mile and for two, three and four-year-olds. Fields are determined by stake money earned this season, with the top 12 earners in each category gaining selection.
