When Kerry Dance leased The Moth he didn't notice the quarter crack in one of her hooves.

"She was standing in a muddy paddock," Dance, of Dunedin, said.

"I got her home and saw the crack. I was wishing I hadn't taken her."

Acting on advice from Timaru trainer-farrier Trevor Harkness, Dance treated the crack.

"I've never had any trouble with it," Dance said yesterday.

He took charge of The Moth in June and in 21 subsequent starts, she has posted three wins, two seconds, five thirds and $25,969.

"This is the best season I've ever had. It's like winning Lotto."

She won a heat of the Southern Belle Speed Series in 1min 56.6sec at Wyndham on February 7.

The seven-year-old Caprock mare gained her fifth career win when scoring at Forbury Park last Thursday night. The Moth returns to Southland on Saturday for the SBS Pace at Ascot Park.

"She seems to be getting better all the time," Dance said.

"She's giving everyone round Forbury a buzz. It's great."

Brent Barclay has driven The Moth in her three wins this season.

Benhar Brat is the other contributor to Dance's five training wins this term.

Apart from training a couple of horses, Dance erects signage for for 10 real estate companies in Dunedin.

"I've been doing it for 22 years. My father was a real estate agent and when he retired, he did it for something to do."

Kerry Dance had earlier worked at an abattoir and the Burnside freezing works.
