Fine food, roaring fires, a TAB and entertainment galore marked the Caduceus Club of Southland function at Lochiel on Harness Jewels day.
About $19,000 was invested through the tote as the 140 patrons watched the Jewels action from Cambridge on a large screen.
Entertainment included a fashion parade, which featured some well-known harness racing figures modelling racing carnival outfits provided by Julie Bryce Fashion Emporium.
Items such as World Cup referee jerseys, jewellery, horse goods and services and romantic Ladies Day Out and Wild in Western Southland packages were sold by auction at the function.
Oysters were amongst the raffle prizes but a degree of skill was required to win them. Before each Jewels race participants had to put their raffle tickets in a barrel corresponding with a horse number. Following each race, draws were made only from the barrels of the horses placed first, second, third and last.
Real estate agent Sean Bellew, a recent addition to the ranks of successful harness racing owners, compered the function.
According to one of the organisers, Katrina Price, the day embodied the main aims of the Caduceus movement — bringing people together for a fun and social day; supporting harness racing; and raising funds for the Caduceus Club and charity. She hoped its success may lead to an increase in the stake of the club's flagship 2-year-old fillies race and subsequent elevation to group-race status.
