The crowd at the Cromwell Christmas races today is tipped to reach more than 8000.

Racegoer Trish Linton said today was a social day out.

While Eleanor Hamilton added: ''You need to get her early or you miss out on a table.''

Otago Racing Club chief executive Andre Klein expects the crowd to grow to 8000.

Racing at the Central Otago course started at midday.
