Southland is unbeaten after two games at the New Zealand under-17 age group netball championships in Hastings.

The championships, consisting of 33 teams, began at the Hawke's Bay Regional Sports Park yesterday. Southland won its only game yesterday beating Mid Canterbury 53-28.

The Southland team tasted more success this morning with a satisfying win over Rotorua, 35-17.

Coach Rata Hopa said play was ''a little scrappy'' at times, but her team stayed calm and finished the game off strongly.

''In the third quarter we took off,'' Hopa said.

Sarah Marshall switched from goal attack to goal shoot after Bayley Smith injured her knee in the first quarter. Smith will miss this afternoon's game against Hamilton City.

Meanwhile, Gracey Farquharson is Southland's lone umpire at the championships.
