Bettor Buy It scores
Unraced 3-year-old Bettor Buy It took another step towards the Sires Stakes Series when winning at the Ascot Park trials yesterday.
Bettor Buy It won a maiden heat after settling fifth and sprinting to the lead at the 500m. Driver Tim Williams had a good hold of him at the finish, the combination winning by three-quarters of a length in 2min 49.6sec (2200m mobile).
''He's a nice horse to drive, an athletic type,'' Williams said.
Winton trainer Des Baynes intends to give Bettor Buy It one start before lining him up in the third heat of the Sires' Stakes Series at Forbury Park on October 3.
Bettor Buy It showed promise last season with a win and a second at trials and a win at workouts. He did not race last term because of a minor mishap.
''He kicked a rail and we decided to turn him out,'' Baynes said.
''He's had quite a bit of work [in this preparation].''
Bettor Buy It is a half-brother by Bettor's Delight to Sweet Talking Man (13 wins, Sires' Stakes 2-Year-Old Final) and Stylish Sweetheart (12 wins, Ladyship Stakes).
Their granddam, Sweet Alli, rates as a half-sister to 1990 New Zealand Cup winner Neroship.
The green, black and gold colours used by former Winton trainer Alan Scobie were back on the track yesterday.
The colours, now owned by his daughter Jan-Maree Pyle, were seen behind yesterday's fastest qualifier, Phoenix Warrior.
She and husband Karl, who are dairy farmers at Waianawa, own the Jereme's Jet-Never Walk Alone 3-year-old gelding in Tony Barron's Makarewa stable.
Barron drove Phoenix Warrior in front yesterday. Phoenix Warrior set a brisk pace and comfortably won by one and a-quarter lengths in 2:47.5 (2200m mobile), with his closing 800m in 57.2.
''I'll give him another trial on the 25th [October] and then he can have a break,'' Barron said.
''We'll aim him at Christmas racing.''
