Haruki wins debut
Japanese jockey Masaji Haruki won with his first trial ride in Southland when scoring on Five Kings at Wyndham yesterday.
Five trials were held on a heavy track and in windy conditions. Haruki is working for Otautau dairy farmer Bruce Tapper, who received his trainer's licence in July.
Haruki has ridden five race winners in New South Wales. His last race ride was three years ago.
Five Kings, unplaced in three trials last year for Christchurch trainer Michael Pitman, disputed the lead yesterday and was untroubled to win by one and a-quarter lengths in a maiden heat.
Ruby Red, who won four races for Pitman and Tapper last season, has been retired. She had a bone chip removed from her near side knee two weeks ago and needs six months' rest.
''There was only a 50-50 chance that she'd race again,'' Tapper said.
She had a bone chip removed from the same knee 18 months ago. The Dehere 4-year-old mare is booked to White Robe Lodge stallion Raise The Flag.
An unnamed Danske 4-year-old gelding, trained by Ellis Winsloe, won an 800m maiden trial in the hands of Wingatui apprentice Doni Prastiyou.
''He won a trial at Winton last year and then hurt a stifle,'' Winsloe said of the 4-year-old.
The gelding's dam, Lilly's Choice, is a sister to Gladiator's Choice (seven wins).
Trainer Sally McKay's winner yesterday, an unnamed Fast N Famous 4-year-old gelding, indicated he was ready to race when winning nicely over 800m.
Quoin, winner of a 0-1-win trial, will probably start at Gore on September 30. Tapanui-trained Libetto won the open heat yesterday. She gained a third and a sixth from two 2-year-old starts last season and is being aimed at the fillies' races.
