Jimmy impresses at trials
Three-year-old gelding Jimmy is showing promise for Tapanui trainers Nikki and Barrie Blatch.
He won decisively by four lengths in an 800m maiden trial at Winton yesterday. Nikki said Jimmy could have his first totalizator start at Ascot Park on November 1.
‘‘He is a nice horse,’’ she said.
‘‘Our intentions are the [southern] guineas races, if he steps up to where we think he’ll go.’’
Stablemate Libetto finished fourth in the $50,000 Ray Coupland Stakes at Ashburton on Saturday. She heads back to Canterbury for the $70,000 Canterbury Stakes at Riccarton this Saturday.
Other maiden winners yesterday — Westarm, Point Proven and Oor Wullie — are also being aimed at the Southland Racing Club’s meeting on November 1.
Gore trainer John McKay said 3-year-old Westarm was a slow maturing horse.
‘‘He’s a big leggy buggar and is going to take time.’’
Point Proven, trained at Winton by Greg Wright, won narrowly but well over 1000m.
‘‘That was a real good learning experience for him, having horses either side of him,’’ Wright said.
She’z A Virtuoso pleased Winton trainer Ross Clark with her win in an open 1000m trial. It was her first outing for eight months. She suffered injuries when caught in a fence in February.
‘‘She’s a bloody nice mare . . . I think she’s got a few more wins in her,’’ Clark said.
Owner-trainer Stephen Blair-Edie is likely to nominate Slam Dunk for the Southland meeting after the gelding won an open trial yesterday.
