Quick As I Can, a winner and twice placed in his last three starts, has injured a suspensory ligament and been retired by Karitane owner Barrie Barber.

The 4-year-old son of Washington VC-Quite Classy co-owned by Michael Chin, of Christchurch, won at Gore last month from the Waikouaiti stable of Bruce Negus. Quick As I Can began racing last season from the Mark Purdon stable with a win and three placings in four starts.

''I have had him [Quick As I Can] X-rayed and there is some degeneration in the joint and I will not carry on with him,'' Barber said.

''I have a 2-year-old half-brother by Changeover who has been broken in.''
